Due to the lack of rainfall in Palkot this year, mushroom was thought to be a viable option for an alternative livelihood option which can bring nutrition to plate with less investment. Though the people in this part of the world is exposed to naturally grown mushroom, it was hard to do the dialoguing because they have never done mushroom cultivation before.
The discussion about ajivika of women from Neha SHG and Juhi SHG the idea of mushroom was put forward for the first time in which the groups showed their interest. Then SHG meeting in Bhaoratoli, the thought was shared again. The SHGs from both of the places wanted to go for an exposure, after which exposure to Kuli was arranged where the process of cultivation was demonstrated.
After the exposure four SHGs (Bhaoratoli- Navadeep SHG, Adivasi SHG, Laxmibai SHG Rokedega-Neha SHG) and seven women individually wanted to start it.14½ Kgs of Spawn, Chemicals (Bevastine+Formaline) and plastic bags were brought from Khunti Cooperative and the cultivation was started.
Eventually looking at the expansion and increasing demand of mushroom, Krishi Bagwani S.S. Samiti Ltd. Palkot started availing mushroom spawn at Palkot from Systematic Agro Based Research Center, Patna.
The intervention grew to two more blocks reaching about 200 families. Women like Sobha Devi, Sarita Devi, Sabita Manjhi and growing oyster mushroom with confidence and looking forward to tomorrow.
